Has anyone used a professional moving company in the past when you have relocated? Horror stories? Good stories? I'd love to hear both! Thanks!

  1. We have twice. They wrap a nickle they find on the floor with 20 peices of paper just to jack with you. DVD everything you have so you can tell the condition of everything, especially those things you love. We lost about 25k in tools because they forgot to pack up oour tools in the basement and when they left the basement door was open so people just stole them.

Id rather box everything myself and then have someone else load it, which is a bigger pain in the butt.

  2. Don't use Jackson Movers in Evanston.  They showed up at the scheduled time, took a look at all the boxes (about 75) in my one bedroom apartment and left saying they'd be right back.  The excuse was that the truck needed something fixed.  They never came back.  I  had no phone so I had to find a pay phone and contact the office who informed me they were at my apartment.  I had to phone them several times before they finally believed that they were really not there.  I started calling other movers from the phone book and all were suspicious as to why the other mover abandoned the job.  One of them asked if I was moving toxic waste or something.  I didn't  have a sleeper couch,  a piano, appliances or anything else ridiculously laborious.  I finally found a mover but had to wait 3 days.  So, I spent 3 days in an apartment completely boxed up with no phone or gas.

The next time I moved, I used Bekins at the recommendation of someone who regularly hires movers to transport fragile antiques.  They were better however several things were missing upon arrival and my landlord informed me that several of their things were missing from the garage.

I wish I had a good mover to recommend.  I'd definitely advise packing your own stuff to avoid theft and don't leave them with anything fragile, valuable or dear.  It's worth the hassle of moving those items yourself.

I haven't checked Angie's list or Yelp to see if they have movers rated on their sites.  Might be worth a shot.

  3. My brother used movers during his big city move to a new apartment.  I know that it's expensive, but so are doctors bills and lost wages due to injury trying to carry something super heavy!  We're getting ready for a move and are doing the light boxes ourself.  The movers are going to do all of the furniture.  We're moving about 7 miles from our current residence, so it's been a nice slow process.
