Professional landscapers only... What type of sod will grow in a completely shaded area?

and is a load of dirt completely necessary or can i just till up the current sandy soil...i live in the south, so it's pretty much sand instead of soil

  1. Not a "professional" but I worked at a landscaping company for four years.  I do not know what variety exactly but you can buy sod/seed that is labeled/branded "shade mix"


  2. With regards to the first jackass who answered here, I didn't realize that xenophobia and racism were part of the answer she (the asker) was looking for. I bet she probably wanted an answer more along the lines of:

    Use this: Shady Nooks Grass Seed by Jonathan Green. Look it up online, lots of great reviews.

    Also, definitely add some topsoil and till that under with what you have. After that, follow the directions that you get with the seed.

  3. If your soil is in good condition, it will not be necessary to bring n soil, unless you need to elevate or level the area.

    In the south is a wide term, where are you actually. Some grass varieties flourish fairly well in shaded areas and some do not.

    For example, St. Augustine works fairly well in shaded areas, this depends on your climate.
