  1. The art of body modification, otherwise known as piercing, is fast becoming another art form as much so as tattooing. Getting body modification is a rite of passage as well as a way to show your station in a society of some cultures. The United States is not much different using body modification as a rite of passage as many people view it as an individuals testament to controlling fear and pain. Being a piercer allows you to help someone achieve this goal but becoming a professional piercer takes a lot of time and hard work.

    Step1

Locate a shop that does body piercing that has a good reputation for it. Ask around. People are very honest when it comes to piercing.

    Step2

Visit several of the shops and find one that will give you an apprenticeship. If more than one will choose the one that you feel the most comfortable with.

    Step3

Contact OSHA, the National Safety Council or the Red Cross and find a class on blood borne pathogens. Go and take notes. You will get a certificate of completion.

    Step4

Attend classes on CPR and First Aid and keep up on your certifications.

    Step5

Train as an apprentice for three months where you will watch and learn about the shop and its policies including sterilization, cross-contamination, disinfection techniques as well as other health and safety.

    Step6

Spend six to twelve months as a full time apprentice under the supervision of a trained and licensed professional watching everything so that you can learn how to treat a customer, about all of the jewelry available (size, selection, quality), how to handle problems when they arise and to correct them and the aftercare treatments.

    Step7

Watch the piercing procedures several time before doing them as a professional guides you.

    Step8

Attend a course on the human anatomy which will also cover hygiene and show piercing demonstrations.

    Step9

Attain a certificate of license from the Association of Professional Piercers in order to be recognized as a reputable and professional body piercer.
