Question:

Professional training for domestic guard dogs?

I want to buy a dog and have it trained professionally to act as a guard dog. I am a responsible thirty year-old, not a thug, so I will not do it if there is any danger of it going wrong. Is it safe to do this or should I abandon the idea? I don't want to end up with an aggressive dog that is likely to maul a small child. Also, is there any reliable literature on the subject. I am interested in reading further.

  1. You do have to be very careful if a dog has been trained to protect that it has been trained properly by professionals, like the police force.

There are many dogs that don't need to be trained to protect, it's a natural instinct and I think you would be better off with one of these.  I have a pitbull/rottweiler, she is 1 year old and she is a great family pet.  We never play rough with her or encourage aggressiveness.  She is docile and gentle and scared of the cat.  If we let anyone in our house she never jumps up at them and lets them stroke her.  she will allow us to take a bone or food from her mouth.  But she is a natural protector.  We have a large garden and one night I thought I heard running water, I went outside to investigate.  All our dogs sleep outside.  She heard me   but couldn't see me and didn't know it was me,  and started to make scary low growling noises, once she knew it was me she was ok, but I know that if we had an intruder she would certainly see them off and if anyone attacked me she would attack.

Of course her appearance is a deterrent cos she looks real scary.

One more thing if you were in a bad situation and you gave a dog such as a doberman, german shepherd, rottweiler etc the "attack" command, they would attack whether they had been taught to or not, they would understand your intention.

  2. Do some research online you can purchase a dog already trained for personal protection. Just because a dog is trained to protect does not mean it is aggrressive at all. You cant just pick out a dog, buy it, and then have it trained. The dogs must have a certain personality and drive. Find a company that specializes in personal protection.Do some research, there is plenty of info out there.

  3. We have a Doberman. She is fantastic with our 6 year old, and her friends. Then she's a natural guard dog, and knows what to guard. Never been given professional training either.

  4. you need to be more specific in your question,do you want a dog for your own personal safety  or to guard your property,or both?.certain breeds already have the capability to do this naturally when you have bonded with them, but if your looking for a dog who will attack at a certain command unless you are specially trained yourself is against the law.in protecting your property you will have more trouble finding a dog what will not bark at strangers approaching your property.

  6. Why on earth would you need a guard dog?

  7. Google A1 K9, they are a dog trainer located in Wales but will ship dogs to desired country. They specialise in professionall training security dogs and have them for sale on the website. they have GSD's, mallanois, cane corso, dogue de bordeaux and imported dobermanns with cropped ears, docked tail etc.

Have a look.. cant hurt can it?

  8. Nice to hear from someone responsible. Yes, there are dogs bred and trained for that reason, not cheap, but, they are available!

No, there is nothing wrong with a dog trained to do a job that is was originally bred to do.

Please contact a trainer in your area that has the resources and the experience to train a dog like that and inquire for more info.

There is a ton of lit of the net..start with Ed at leerburg.com and then look for more. Good luck, hope I helped!
