I want to dance broadway or some other way professionally. I've danced since I was 6. I do ballet and gymnastics and might learn jazz this year. I'm a teen. I want this more than anything. Any ideas how?

Oh and can someone also tell me how old I must be to audition for So you think you can dance?

Thx.

  1. Hi Opal,

Since I'm not sure how old you are, I'm not sure how many years it's been since six years old.  However, I can tell you a few tips about making it in this business.

I'm a ballet dancer, but I can tell you generally that if you want to be a professional, you need to pick one style and take at least 25 hours a week in that style.  If you have free time (which I doubt you will, but stranger things have happened), you can try to take a class or two in another style.  I don't recommend it.

It would help a lot if you gave me a link to your school or studio's website.  I would like to see how professional your school is, and therefore how much work you have to do personally to become a professional.  Usually I can tell the level of professionalism in a studio by looking at the website, the format, the pictures, etc.  I can tell you approximately how much work you need to do to be accepted into a professional school or company, or at least be considered.

My best tip for you in auditions is add your own artistry.  If you go to a professional audition and dance like, "I'm going to do this combination RIGHT, goshdarnit," and do it very mechanically and technically, there is no chance in h**l that the directors and judges will even glance in your direction.  You need to stand out and be unique, while still doing the combination.  Like I say to my students: think like a dancer, and you'll look like a dancer.

You need to have confidence.  If you've ever been involved in the theater, you know how to act in an audition.  Act with confidence, poise, and speak up, but don't be cocky and arrogant.  Speak only when spoken to, stand up straight, and follow the director's corrections.  Never, ever, ever apologize; it's just about the worst thing you can possibly do in an audition.

If you're interested in more tips and if you have any more questions, don't hesitate to contact me.  Good luck and keep dancing!♥

  2. SING SING SING SING!!! You can't be a broadway star unless you can act and sing. Dancing will only get you so far on Broadway. You should learn tap and jazz.  If you're only interested in Dancing, head out to LA and take some classes at The Edge or The Dance Center (formerly Tremaine Dance Center).  Definately learn Jazz, Tap, and Hip Hop.  The biggest thing in the Dance industry is: If you are going to be a professional, make sure you have connections.  The more classes you take, the more people you meet, the more work you'll get.  Good Luck!

  3. you should also do ballet, jazz, and lyrical it would really help your routine and give you more to learn about. and for the auditioning you have to be 18 or older.

i hope to see you on broadway some day!

  4. I can't speak to the dance career advice, but you have to be 18 to audition for the show.
