Profile: Justin Peter Rose
Justin Peter Rose was born on 30th July, 1980 in Johannesburg, South Africa. When Rose was just 5 years old, he moved to the United Kingdom as his family shifted due to economic reasons. Taking part in sporting activities was a large part of Justin’s upbringing in England and tennis, soccer, cricket and kart racing summed up his childhood memories. However, as time passed ahead and Justin grew older, he started taking a keen interest in the game of golf.
Rose became prominent in 1988 at The Open Championship when he was seventeen years old. He putted a dramatic shot from the rough for a birdie on the 18th to finish at the fourth position. Peter turned professional in the following week, but initially struggled really hard, missing 21 cuts in a row.
However, Rose and his career started to rise. At the Dunhill Championship in 2002 at South Africa, he got his first professional event which was followed by three more victories in the same year. In 2003, he was ranked as the 33rd ranked player in world. In 2004, he played in America on the PGA Tour as well by maintaining his membership of the European Tour. Unfortunately, that year was not good for Rose and he slipped out of the top 50 in the world rankings.
His ranking continued to fall till early 2005. In March, Peter announced that he was quitting the European Tour in order to concentrate on playing in America. However, this couldn’t bring any changes in his performance and by the middle of the year he had fallen out of the World Top 100. In August, 2005, he made an announcement of returning back to the European Tour. Later in the same week, he had his best result of the year at the Buick Championship where he stayed on the PGA Tour.
In the 1006 Canadian Open in September, Justin went into the final round for the very first time in his career but failed in the final round. He finished on the second spot at the Valero Texas Open and ended 47th on the cash list with US$1.629 million in prize money. He forgot about his past performances and tried his best to end this year on a high note. In November, 2006, Justin won the Australian Masters to claim his first title in four years. He improved consistently by staying at the top 5 in the 2007 Masters as well. Due to these performances, Justin won the 26th spot in World Rankings on 8th of April, 2007.
Justin moved into the top 20 of the World Rankings for the very first time. In October, he had reached a new career high of number 12th in the world along with the best British golfer of all time. Justin won the European Tour Order of Merit title for 2007 in a breathtaking match at the Volvo Masters. Justin became the top ranked European golfer for the first time when he got results out of his hard struggle and efforts when he achieved the seventh position in world rankings. Afterwards, Justin moved to the 6th position in world rankings. He has spent more than 30 weeks in the top 10 since 2007.
Quite recently in 2010, Rose got the third position at the Honda Classic. He came with a victory at the Memorial Tournament in the final round of 66 to win by 3 strokes against Rickie Fowler. It came as a huge sigh of relief for Justin because this was his first win in the United States which was his childhood dream after winning the memorial tournament. Rose was desperately trying to qualify for the U.S. Open 2010 but unfortunately did not succeed.
Rose is currently married to his long-time girlfriend Kate Phillips as they tied the knot in December, 2006 who is a British former international gymnast. On 21 February 2009, the couple had a son named Leo.
