I plan to recycle my old desktop computer very soon, and I want to delete everything off my hard drive. I was wandering if anyone could tell me the name of a well trusted program, that is free, that can do this for me.

Thanks! =]

Also, if there is anything else I should do to my computer before I recycle it, please tell me. All I really know is that I should delete everything that's on my hard drive.

  1. Use this program called WipeDrive:

Be sure to do at least 10 or more passes on the drive to get a true wipe of the media.

Here's the link to the free software:

  2. Why bother... just keep the hard disk drive and you can install it simply in your next computer.... that way all of your files and data is fully available to you on that drive..... If you feel the old computer should have a drive on it, then purchase an inexpensive small capacity HDD that the next user of the computer can use to install an operating system on it....

Technically speaking you can't wipe the drive clean enough that someone could be prevented from getting your info off of it with one of the more expensive file recovery programs....

  3. You don't need a program to do it. You can delete everything off your harddrive simply by going to cmd prompt and typing "cd C:\" and then typing "del /S /F * " then leave the command prompt running and sit and wait. Or you can also type "deltree C:\"

  4. I would recommend DBAN. As for any extra advice, keep any parts that you may need down the line (RAM, Optical Drives, that kind of thing).
