  1. God bless you for offering something of real value to your fellow soldiers. In many jobs that they might get upon returning home, they'll be able to earn more if they can also speak Spanish.

If you can bring actual books with you, my favorite is Spanish The Easy Way, published by Barrons: http://barronseduc.com/0764119745.html  All the explanations plus space for writing out the exercises are in this one paperback book.

If you have to do it all through the Internet, my favorite site is Learn Spanish: http://learnspanish.com/  This site offers all the lessons and many online, interactive quizzes and tests for free. If you want more, it's not expensive to buy.

If you really want to focus on the spoken language, the very best for this is the Pimsleur method: http://www.pimsleuraudio.com/  You can download their programs or bring them along in CD format. I'd suggest the Spanish I comprehensive downloadable. All the learning takes place by listening and repeating or answering questions. It's highly effective, and it's great for people who don't want to study grammar or who don't need to be able to read and write the language. The nice thing about Spanish, as you know, is that it's a phonetic language. As long as you can pronounce it correctly, you can spell it.

Ideally, your students would learn to read, write, listen and speak. With these tools, you can tailor it to what their needs are. The Learn Spanish site teaches the grammar in the most logical order, so you can just work through the lessons step by step. Of course you can always look for more teaching tools by searching on google. My very favorite online dictionary is http://wordreference.com   If there's a word or phrase that's not well defined, you can check the forums to see how people figured it out, or you can ask your own questions.

Finally, if they want to text chat with native speakers of Spanish to practice, there are a number of sites for this. I'd suggest you start at my own Spanish teaching website so that they can learn how to be most successful when text chatting:

    http://lonniechu.com/spanish/chat.html

You'll find a lot more resources, and links to some of the above, starting at my site's home page: http://lonniechu.com/spanish/index.html

Good luck with your deployment and with your students!

  2. You can download Rosetta Stone from the internet I believe.

  3. There are a lot of learning tools to learn another language, but if you are being deployed to Iraq, don't you think you should learn their language instead of wasting your time teaching the others' a language that is useless to them?....
