Programmable Thermostat = Much Higher Bill?

We installed a Honeywell programmable thermostat back in November and our december gas bill came in about 40% HIGHER. We have a Ruud Achiever 90 Plus powered by gas.the temp is programmed to be 72 when we are here and 67 at night and when we are not home. Everything seems to be working ok. Any thoughts?
