  1. Oncogenes promote cell division.

Tumor-suppressor genes limit cell division, often by regulating oncogenes.

When oncogenes are over expressed, expressed at the wrong time, or in the wrong tissue, cancer can be a result.

  2. Genes involved in normal cell division and proliferation are referred to as proto-oncogenes. However, if one or more of these genes become mutated in such fashion that they cause cancer, they are then referred to as Ocongenes.
