Prom/Charity ideas?!?!?

So i've heard of proms that brings charity into its themes. Which I thought was such a great thing! So i'm in the committee this year and would love to suggest this idea, but what good charities are there that might also go with a high school prom theme or just how to you execute this.

Have a casual dinner at a local club instead and get everybody to pay what they would have for suits, dresses, cars and fancy decorations ect. to charity. I'm not going to mine because at the end of the day what have you accomplished by wasting your money on clothing that you'll never wear again and cars that you drive in for, for a few hundred metres. Prom = waste.
