Prom Meesawat starts well at the World Golf Championships – HSBC Champions
Thailand’s Prom Meesawat carded a five-under par 67 in the opening round of the World Golf Championships – HSBC Champions, to tie for the seventh position on the leaderboard, on Thursday, November 1, 2012.
The last of the four WGCs is being played at the Olazabal Course at the Mission Hills Golf Club. HSBC Champions is the only WGC that is held outside the United States.
Meesawat opened his account with a par putt on the first hole and followed that with a birdie on the second.
He then parred each of the next seven holes to reach the turn with one-under. His back-nine performance was even better, as he added another four shots to his scorecard to finish two strokes behind the co-leaders Louis Oosthuizen and Adam Scott.
Meesawat is now confident to remain consistent in the remaining rounds to record the second professional victory of his career. His only victory came in the Asian Tour’s SK Telecom Open in 2006.
“It feels very, very good. The field is stronger this week than last week (in Malaysia). There are a lot of good players, Phil Mickelson and Bubba Watson, are on the leaderboard. It’s good to shoot a low round”.
Talking to the reporters after his round, he stated the he did not fully utilized the five par-five holes on the course, as he birdied only one of them – the 15th hole.
“On the front nine on those par fives, I missed the tee shots …. only one birdie. It happens. But I was two under par on the par threes which is good,” said the amiable Thai. “I’m hitting the ball very good and had many good iron shots. I put the ball in
good positions”.
The highlight of his performance includes a 25-foot birdie putt that came on the 17th hole. Furthermore, he also made a brilliant par save on the 13th hole, where he rolled in the ball from 12 feet.
Oosthuizen, in the meantime, displayed an amazing set of skills and recorded seven birdies without conceding a single bogey to share the lead with Scott.
Phil Mickelson, Bubba Watson, Peter Hanson and Shane Lowry tied for the third position after recording a six-under par 66 each.
