A horse at my local stable had issues with a crop. When someone hands you a crop, this horse comes spinning a round and kicks that person. I don't know whats up with him?

  1. he might of been abused with a whip or a crop before. Why do you need a crop anyways? if the horse doesnt like them then dont use them.

  2. good answer barrel racer.

    I second that answer.

that is one smart, from experience, horse.

it is too bad more horses can't communicate this so eloquently.

NEXT DAY: tell your horse teachers to forget about the whip for a while. If they insist you carry a whip(which I particularly don't agree with, but let's say, that for the arena or the show it is part of the equipment and therefore cannot be avoided) TRY THIS CAREFULLY: They sell at tack stores a stick with horse tail hair it is for shushing flies in summer while riding or while a horse is being shod, you can also make one if you can't find it in a store.

Then let him see it when he is in his stall and show him that it is not a whip and brush it against him, and this must be done carefully and actually use it to shush flies, like he would use his tail, then after a week or so of him getting used to it(some suggested to hang it in or around his stall) GOOD SUGGESTION.

then try this instead of someone handing you a whip, take the handle of that fly stick and put it in the middle of your back and shove the handle in your pants or under your belt, so from the front it is completely hidden from your horse, then mount him and ride him for a while, and after a while slowly, slooowly, reach back and pull that stick out, BE CAREFUL and somewhat at the ready, but calm, because he might react in many different ways, one being to take off running, but once he realizes that it is only a fly shusher, and becomes comfortable with it, and that he is not going to be punished or beaten with it, then he might be more acceptable to carry a whip after  a some time, but most likely this horse could have been severely beaten with a whip and will ALWAYS PROTECT himself from anyone coming at him with a whip no matter what you do.

  3. Some one has definitely beat this horse . Try putting one in the stall with him and leave it there this may help him get used to it . Hang it where he can see it all the time, this should help him calm down.

  4. it sounds like hes had a bad experience of people with a whip, he is frightened, you need a behaviourist to analyse him and sort out a possible solution, or just keep whips away from him.

  5. More than likely the horse has probably been beaten with a crop by a previous owner or rider so the horse has come to fear the crop.  The horse is afraid of being beaten so of course the horse is going to do what it can to protect itself.

  6. you should wonder what's up with the trainers that it took them three times to realize the horse had issues with the crop.

you can train a horse just fine without a crop, it just takes a bit more work and understanding of the horse.

  7. maybe he's gotten beat with one before.
