I've been doing some research into Prometrium, my doctor just put me on it to help get my progesterone levels up from 16 to over 20. In your opinion and experience, does Prometrium help keep pregnancy healthy or just delay the inevitable?

  1. I have used prometrium two times.  Once when I carried my now 7 year old son, and with this pregnancy which is going great!  I had 2 miscarriages when I was not put on prometrium, so I have to say that it is a miracle drug!  It will sustain most pregnancies.  Good luck!

  2. I had 3 miscarriages from 2004 to 2006.  I was seeing a reproductive endocrinologist at the end of 2006 for recurrent miscarriages, when I got pregnant again.  He checked my progesterone and said it was low but did not give me an exact #.  I was put on prometrium 200 mg twice a day until 12 weeks, and I had a beautiful healthy daughter in July 2007.  I am now 13 weeks and 2 days pregnant and I had taken prometrium again,  until a few days ago.

I guess there is no way to know for sure if prometrium is the reason I didn't miscarry or if it was just meant to be, but I believe I owe my daughter and my current pregnancy to modern medicine.

  3. Prometrium is a synthetic form of progesterone. Progesterone is a hormone your body is supposed to naturally make when you are pregnant to basically "hold in" the pregnancy. If you have low progesterone levels your body will miscarry, but it does not mean that there is anything wrong with the fetus. It just keeps the pregnancy healthy, if there is a problem with the fetus, it will stop growing and your HCG levels will go down regardless if you have enough progesterone or not, so they should be monitoring that as well. Good luck.
