  1. I have never given, nor have received a promise ring.  My now husband gave me an engagement ring and before that gave me a ring as a gift, but it wasn't a promise ring.

I think they are dumb and are for high schoolers who think they will be with their sweetheart forever (which is HIGHLY unlikely).

  2. Dumb!! Its for junior high kids, really. So they can play grown-up.

  3. It's Not Stupid.

Some People Simply Can't Afford To Buy Engagement Rings.

I Don't See Why It Would Be Stupid Or Immature.

Teenagers & Adults Have Every Right To Give Out Or Wear A Promise Ring.

  4. If someone gave me one I would probably laugh. I think if you're committed enough to get engaged then you should get engaged. Don't promise to promise to marry.

But I'm in my 20s. I guess it's more common among 14-15 year olds.

  5. Hi the only time it wouldn't be a great idea is if you haven't made up your mind to get married. If you gave it to her with the intention of eventually feeling that way--then that is stupid. Otherwise, I agree with everyone else--its a great sweet way to show your intentions but only once they are actually felt.

  6. It's not dumb and it's not just for kids!!!

Promise rings can be worn for any number of reasons, not just romantic.

A friend may bestow a promise ring to another friend to signify their loyalty and/or resolve to remain friends forever. They can be given at graduations, or to long distance friends as a daily reminder of the friendship.

In other cases, a promise ring may just be purchased for oneself as a reminder of a personal promise.

Promise rings are sometimes worn as a symbol of a vow to practice celibacy until marriage. The ring is usually worn on the left ring finger with the implication that the wearer will remain abstinent until it is replaced with a wedding ring. Although the ring is worn on the hand, where others can see, its main purpose is to serve as a constant reminder to the wearer of their commitment between themselves and God to remain pure until marriage.

Promise rings can also be worn as a symbol of abstinence from drugs, alcohol, or self harm.

All a promise ring is is a visual symbol of a personal decision.

  7. I received one, then he go me an engagement ring later. But it was the sweetest gesture. Because I knew he loved me, and I knew he'd get the engagement ring when he could afford it. And I don't think it's a dumb idea.

  8. they're dumb

  9. My friend is 32 and her fiance, also 32, recently gave her a promise ring. He has an engagement ring picked out but it is over $5000 and can't afford it right now, but he wanted her to have a smaller ring in the meantime.

I think the plan is that he will propose 'properly' when he pays off the big ring, even though they have wedding plans in place.

I have a teenage friend who bought matching promise rings with her boyfriend. They are planning on getting married when they get the money, and like with my other friend, the promise ring is to make do before she gets a real engagement ring.

I don't feel the need for them, but if that's what they want to do then that's up to them. I definitely don't think it's dumb, and it's not just teenagers that do it.

  10. I am a girl and i have never recieved one but i dont think they are dumb. I think a promise ring is a sweet way to say that in the future when you are both ready for the next level yo will get engaged. I think it is a symbol of love for budding relationships.

  11. i think they arent dumb. its a way for younger kids (like high school not junior high, ???) to show commitment, its a symbol of it. my boyfriend and i hav been dating for a year and he gave me one as a symbol of his commitment to me, because we're way to young to be engaged or married. i think they are cute.

    help me out?
