  1. Hi.

There are various things you can do to encourage language development.

Firstly ensure that your child has developed the important skills which are precursors to language development.  Does he make eye contact and look at your face when you speak?  These skills are important because faces communicate, so if he does not, develop a few games which encourage him to do so.

Has your child developed primary intersubjectivity with you? (joint attention).  Again, if not, develop a few games which encourage this.

Nex, it is important that your child is exposed to as wide a vocabulary as possible as frequently as possible.  - There is considerable evidence that children who are exposed to this invariably develop better spoken language skills and develop literacy more easily.

Next, ensure that your child is exposed to rhyme and alliteration.  children who are exposed to these develop better spoken language and literacy skills.

You could also think about a programme of phonological awareness.  English has between 43 and 47 separate sounds within it's sound system, - make sure your child hears all of them and can use and manipulate all of them.

Just a few pointers; - hope this helps.

  2. talk to him all the time! narrate everything that you do, explain to him. It will seem like you are talking to yourself, but the child will pick up everything. and dont forget to read!!!! story time rocks!

  3. definately reading. picture books. where there is one picture and a word on each page. teach him simple words like bottle, cup, milk, eat, mommy, and dont respond to grunts and pointing. the worst mistake most parents make is that they dont make their kids talk, when the kid grunts and points they give the kid what he wants.

  4. At 15 to 17 months old, a child should be consistently using approximately 10-15 words spontaneously. S/e should also be able to imitate new words easily, use true words within jargon, label/name objects in his/her environment independently.

Children don't typically begin to produce two-word phrases until they are two years old. Once they are three years old, they are expected to produce two-word phrases consistently and begin to produce three-word phrases occasionally.

Here are some strategies that I have suggested previously to other parents. You can implement these in every-day activities or routines in order to facilitate language stimulation.

    1) do not anticipate your child's needs or wants. In other words, don't just 'give' the child things without him/her attempting to engage with you.

    2) delay your responses to his/her gestures. If the child points to something, allow him to attempt to verbalize the word. After 10 seconds, if he is having trouble retrieving the word, you can model it for him.

    3) Modify your language if necessary. Use clear and short phrases, if needed. And always give the child the correct word if s/he is still using 'baby talk' words.

    4) Read to him/her!!! Show them pictures, point to the pictures, have the child identify them, have the child name them....

    5) Describe what you are doing. For example, if your child is next to you while you are washing dishes, you can say out loud what you are doing, even in a song! (e.g., "soap soap the dishes, now we rinse rinse rinse the dishes, aaand we put them to dry! Dry dry dry!)

    6) Use parallel talk. This is pretty much the same as above, except you are describing what THE CHILD is doing.

    7) Be very encouraging when the child actually does use real words to communicate.

    8) Expand the child's verbalizations. For example, if s/he says 'ball' you can say 'yes, green ball.' If s/he says 'green ball' you can respond 'yes, big green ball,' etc. This will allow the child to also understand expanded sentences.

    9) Be patient.

    :)
