Pronunciation of Omakase?

I asked two people because I want to be able to order it correctly at sushi bars, one said it was "oh-mah-kah-say" and the other said it was "oh-mah-kah-see." Which is correct?

  1. Omm-ah-ka-see is served at the bar only. When you sit down, tell you chef you would like omakase service. Many sushi chefs will ask if you have allergies or preferences. Some places will offer you omakase at a specific price level as well. My best omakase experiences have been when the restaurant is less busy, i.e. not 8 p.m. on a Saturday night.

    Some types of sushi are never eaten with soy sauce. The sushi chef will sometimes say "no soy" when they hand you the fish. Also, if the fish is sauced in some manner, you don't use soy.

  2. It's "oh-mah-kah-say", just like it's "Koh-bay" beef, not "Koh-bee" beef. The "ee" sound is used for the letter "i" in Romanized Japanese.
