June was woworst month for motor industry in 17 years

All major automakers but Honda Motor Co. reported steep sales declines for June as buyers continued to flee from trucks and sport utility vehicles to more fuel-efficient models. High gas prices and a sluggish economy helped keep sales low.

Toyota sales for June shrank 21% from a year earlier, GM had a still-dramatic drop of about 18 %

Overall market fell 18.3%

Toyota:

turck sales down 39%

GM down 16%

Toprak said many automakers simply did not react quickly enough to the staggering rise of gas prices.

Toyota didn't have enough of its fuel-efficient Prius, Corolla or Yaris cars at dealerships to keep up with demand.

Prius sales were hurt by a battery shortage, while sales of the Corolla and Yaris suffered because of plant capacity.

Ford couldn't meet demand for the Focus this month.

Only Honda, reported a sales increase for June= 1%

Ford, which still relies on trucks and SUVs, plunged almost 28%

Ford sold 41 percent fewer of its perennial best-seller, the F-series pickup truck, and it sold fewer than half the number of Explorer SUVs as it did in June 2007.

George Pipas, Ford's top sales analyst, said SUV sales are probably down for good: " many consumers have moved on: the segment has merit for certain consumers but is not likely to rebound at any point."

  1. The only thing that proves is that you're a Bush hating r****d.

  2. Um, it was Democrats that blocked the drilling of oil.

There is a 125 year supply of shale oil in America. America could use shale oil for 125 years without using a single drop of domestic or imported crude oil.

Democrats voted against using shale oil.

Democrats also are against using nuclear energy. Nuclear energy frees up natural gas so more of it is available for cars and trucks. (Numerous states and counties are using natural gas to fuel their cars and trucks)

  3. Democrats have been blocking development of new domestic oil resources for over 15 years now. Your question (really a "push" question more than an actual question) points out the effects of that policy.

The Democrats' justifications for this behavior range from "oil prices won't come down for at lest 3 to 5 years, so why should we allow drilling?" to "the oil companies have lots of leases they're not using now".  Based on the logic of the first statement, we would never plant in the Spring because we wouldn't see any food until the Fall. In answer to the second statement - even at today's high prices, drilling in those places is economically unfeasible. There are plenty of places in the US that we could economically drill, but Democrats refuse to allow new oil wells in the US.

The reason for the current high oil prices & the consequent economic malaise you describe is a shortage of oil supply (versus increasing demand; especially from China, India, and former Soviet-bloc nations). The North American continent has plenty of oil to last for decades - Canada is the largest supplier to the US. The Democrats simply won't let us increase supply.

I'm not a fan of George W, but let's be rational here. The current administration is not responsible for "sabotaging" the economy. Neither is Bush responsible for bubonic plague; AIDS; unrest in the Middle East; ethnic tension in former Soviet countries; jock itch; or those black helicopters that you apparently believe to be hovering over your house.

  4. Not exactly a big Bush fan myself, but where's your proof?

  5. This is proof?  All this shows is that the Energy crisis is effecting everyone.  Put the Kool Aid down.
