Question:

Propane tank for a forklift usable for a BBQ?

I just found a Propane tank that's been used for a forklift. I want to now use this tank for my BBQ but the valve is too small for the connector to the BBQ. Are there any special adapters or valves out there that will allow the Propane tank to fit the BBQ connection?

  1. the valves are different. it is possible to adapt them and yes you can use it for the gas grill. both are LP (Liquefied petrol, same as propane) I made an adapter from an old fuel line for a forklift and a coupling. Any time you allow a gas to expand it will take on heat and create a lower temp many times enough to create frost. Originally I used the adapter to run a space heater because the brakes would freeze up when someone left the forklift out side on break.I have used it for a grill for company picknicks as well.

  2. The different valves for the different tanks is intentional to prevent you from trying to use them interchangeably.

Plus these days, the tanks must have the new valves and be certified in order to get them filled. There will be the original certification date, expiration date, stamped in the metal of the tank. Odds are the tank you found is past that date anyway.

They won't fill it if not certified.

And it is very dangerous to try to remove the valves on a propane tank.

  3. There are SOME forkilift tanks that are vapour withdrawal, but 99% of them are liquid withdrawal. They are definitely not compatible with your BBQ!!!

Just because two things can be threaded together, certainly doesn't mean they belong together!

I hope some of the other responders read that last sentence!!!

Use the correct type of cylinder for the BBQ and leave the forklift cylinders at work where they belong. Your life is worth a lot more than a cylinder full of propane!

  4. They are not compatible. One is liquid propane and one is liquid Gas....If you let the propane tank form the forklift leak out (open the valve) you will immediatley see the area around the valve get extremely frosty and extremely cold...(By the way-do not smoke when you are doing this).Do not use this for your BBQ grill, unles yo are planning on an early retirmen form the world

  5. Well, I don't think so. the forklift uses liquid propane whereas your grill uses gas. I don't think the two canisters are compatible. I'm not sure though.

  6. Creepy Guy hit the nail. Grills use propane vapor to operate. Forklifts use liquid propane. If you hooked this tank up to your grill, you would be over firing the grill about 270 times it's rated BTU capacity.

I believe the proper term is BOOM!!

  7. swap the two valves  from the two tanks- then no adapter is needed
