What are the long term effects of using Propanolol at it's lowest dosage once a day?

I'm talking about the use of it over many years.

Thanks.

  1. Depends what you are taking it for?

I take Betablockers to help with my hormonal migraines (it does work!!) but I know I cannot just stop taking it.  I have to be weaned off it.  I have been taking it for about 3 years - 80mg per day (one tab twice a day).

Your pharmacist or GP is the best person to ask.

  2. I took it for 10 years for depression and had no side affects - never really help the depression either.

  3. Propranolol at normal dosage can have side effects with longterm use.

They are Raynaud's phenomenon, sleep disturbances, sexual dysfunction, purpura, thrombocytopenia, exacerbation of psoriasis, alopecia, dry eyes, exacerbation of asthma.

hypotension, conduction disorders of heart, fatigue

These are rare and the same person will not get all those side effects.

One may get one side effect or more or none at all.

Even, after short term usage some of these effects may occur.

  4. One of the guys said he was taking It for depression ???????

Seems strange taking Propranolol (its correct name) for depression.

It's prescribed use is as a Beta adrenoceptor blocker simple as that.

Intravenously its minimum dose is 10mg @1mg/ml per minute.

Min. dose orally is 40 mg daily.

My therapeutics lecturer once told me that if an attempt was to suddenly excercise after a prolonged period of propranolol use that you may encounter cardiac problems ranging from heart attack to mrebound tachycardia (although that only occurs if the dosage is not titrated(weaned)down gradually.

To the guy who was taking/still is taking it for depression question your GP about that.

Did you use it in conjunction with an anti-depressant ?

Gp's dont always hit the nail on the head when it comes to drug choice and quite often the pharmacist is the one who can resolve and question a Doctors opinion.

In finally answering your problem have you re-visisted your GP for a medication review ?

If not I would do it right away.

    Good luck and take care.

  5. As the name suggests, it makes you go lol.

  6. There are no problems expected in the prolonged use of Propranolol.
