Proper Old Fashioned Cocktail Recipe?

Okay, so I'm a big old fashioned drinker. I've been spoiled in that my friend works at one of the best cocktail bars in NYC and has been making them for me for the past 2 years. Well he just moved, and at the other bars I go to, I have been finding that when I order an Old Fashioned, there are muddled up pieces of orange and cherry in my drink.

My friend always made them like this:

one sugar cube

3 dashes of angostura bitters

dash of club soda

muddle into paste

add large block / fresh, hand cracked ice

2 oz of rye whiskey

Stir and serve

so who's right?

  1. In Bartending the patron is always right, so however you like to drink your drink is the right way. But as for your question technically your right BUT the way i was taught to make an old fashioned is exactly the same way you said except you add a cherry and a orange and muddle them together.  So everyone makes drinks different, so dont be angry at your local bartender for doing it the way he does it, just ask him if he could do it your way ... and everyone is happy ( as long as you tip well )

  2. Budweiser!
