Can someone explain to me the forehand and backhand volley technique, in as much detail as possible. Also some drills for volleys would be handy .

  1. You should use the grip like you're shaking hands with the racket.  The motion is a punch, not a swing.  Make sure you step forward into the ball and hit it out in front.

A site that has interesting ideas on tennis is the one I'm giving as a reference.

  2. Use Eastern Grip or Continental when volleying at net.

  3. always always always use a continental grip for volleys and serves (http://www.tennisserver.com/turbo/images... and never chop down on the ball or even take a swing at the ball a volley should always be a very solid, blocking motion, you want to block the ball back, not hit it. when approaching the net you need to split step which as weird as this sounds means literally having your feet split apart about 3 feet when you reach the net, you should stand about rackets length away from the net. when you hit a forehand volley always step foreword with your left foot and the opposite for you back hand (unless your a lefty then its all flipped around). a good drill to do no matter how wierd it seems is to stand at the net have a guy toss a good drill is the closing volley drill:Start from the service lines, then close in one good step with each volley. This works especially well if you volley semi-aggressively -- not hard, but firmly and at varying heights. You're not trying to put the ball away, but rather to give your partner some moderately difficult balls to handle. This drill develops reactions, footwork, and control, but also the very important habit of closing forward.
