Question:

Proper audio/midi channeling?

I want to have a little just to make the tracks come alive and sound fuller together, but I don't want to make it sound like the old Beatles tracks with two tracks on the left channel at 100% and two tracks on the right channel at 100%. Any suggestions on how to channel tracks, i.e. proportions between drums, vocals, guitars and synths? And whether I should channel midi tracks before converting to audio, then once they're converted, channel them again?

  1. The channeling for stereo works just the same for the old beatles tracks as for the newer stereotracks. The difference lies in how they panned the instruments. In modern mixing the groove (bass and drums) is usually placed in the middle. And the other stuff panned around at your own choosing.

As for the midi. Midi is just the signals to be enterpreted as audio, so as long as you get the sound, it is converted. Pan them how you wish. I don't know your setup so I can't really come with much wisdom on how.
