Proper grammers with 'had' and 'have'?

I had been playing games OR

I have been playing games??

please help!

  1. Well they're both grammatically correct... but they mean two different things.

    I had been playing games (before you invited me to dinner).

    I have been playing games (for the past eleven hours).


  2. "Had been" refers to you actually playing games and now you have stopped and then. . . did something else.  It is longer ago than the second sentence

    "Have been" refers to an action that you stopped, maybe five minutes ago to talk to someone about why you look so sweaty.
