Question:

Proper set up of 5.1 Surround Sound with PS3 and other devices?

I have a Playstation 3 sitting under my 61 inch Samsung TV which has 3 HDMI ports and a Optical Digital-in port. I also have a Samsung DVD player/5.1 Surround Sound system sitting next to that going through HDMI (PS3 uses HDMI too). Finally I have AT&T U-verse HD going through HDMI. I have the Optical cable running from the back of the 5.1 to the TV, thus everything else running into the TV will output from the 5.1 surround sound. Yet, my PS3 doesn't think it is hooked up to 5.1 still, and some games don't support full 5.1 without me manually moving the Optical cord from the TV and plugging it straight into the PS3.

The back of the Surround Sound only has one spot for an Optical Digital in, as does the TV and PS3.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

  1. So let me get this strait, so you have a PS3 and an AT&T U-Verse STB connected to your HDTV via HDMI, then an optical cable going from the HDTV to the DVD player/5.1 surround decoder, right?

In theory, it should support 5.1 (7.1 through HDMI, then converted to 5.1 for the optical cable), so it has to be a setting on the television, a setting on the DVD player, an incompatibility or problem with the HDTV, or a problem, with the DVD player

First, check the television for a sound output option and look for 5.1 for your sound output

If that dosen't work, then your television may be unable to output 5.1 surround sound, so take the optical cable from the HDTV and connect it to the PS3 directly, so that the PS3 is connected to the DVD player directly, then try it again

If that dosen't work, then check your audio settings on the DVD player, then test it again, if it still dosen't work, then it's a problem with the DVD player

  2. It is a problem of DVD system with amp build in. You now have 2 options : first you connect optical cable from device that you want surround sound ( PS3 or cable box ), you still connect HDMI to TV to get video for both. Secondly you have to buy a seperate receiver for more digital audio inputs.

  3. i have my ps3's audio plugged into my dvd player(which is my surround sound).

The back of the dvd player has rca inputs and i use the rca cables that came with the ps3 into those inputs.

This gives my ps3 surround sound.

To me it sounds that if you plug your ps3 into the back of your surround sound/DVD player(if it has those auxiliary inputs) your ps3 will have surround sound.

If that's not the case you may have to purchase an optical splitter.i doubt that they are cheap though.

You may want to unplug everything and do a full set-up again. I had no 5.1 on my tv and xbox for ages. Then one day i pulled it all out and spent an hour or so figuring everything out. Now everything has surround sound.
