Question:

Property Tax?

My father passed away in 1998. When he passed he left me two properties. One is residential and one is commercial. There are several taxes owed on the property and I'm wondering is there anything I can do to get rid of the taxes. I don't know anything about real estate and I'm just wondering what options I have.

  1. Think you had better consult with a trustworthy person . If the taxes are not paid, sooner or later the account will be delinquent, the municipality can place a lien on the property and seize it for back taxes. Then you will have nothing. There are no free rides. The longer you wait the worse the situation.

  2. The only way to get rid of property taxes is to pay them.

They aren't going away on their own.

If you don't pay them the city/county can seize the property and sell to pay the taxes.

  3. You get rid of the back taxes by paying them.

  4. You can't "get rid of" the taxes without getting rid of the property. Is that what you want to do?

If so, contact the city or town tax authority and ask them how to go about turning over your ownership of the property to them. Or you could just sell the property, but you'd have to pay all the back taxes you owe before the sale would be allowed to be finalized.

If you want to keep the property -- you have to pay the taxes. There's no way around it.
