I will be paying the property tax on a relatives house. How does the property tax Refund work differently from the Income tax refund. Are they filed separately or is the property tax refund added when i do my income taxes.

This is for the State of Minnesota.

  1. Property tax refund? Come on. Why don't you call the tooth fairy for an explanation.

  2. No idea. Check with the Minnesota dept of Revenue.

  3. separate

  4. The Minnesota Property Tax Refund is a separate refund that homeowners "may" qualify for.  It is filed for separately from the Federal income tax return and the State of Minnesota income tax return.

Unfortunately, you won't qualify for it as you do not own the property.  A copy of the property tax bill must be sent in with the return and when the names do not match, your return will be rejected.
