If my newphew, his girlfriend, and their son live with me and my house catches fire, wouldn't their personal property be covered by the insurance company.

  1. The girlfriend's property would not. She is not a resident relative (ie. related to you by blood or marriage).

  2. Good question.  No one can answer that.

I CAN tell you, that the NAMED INSURED is the person that gets the claim money.

I can ALSO tell you, that the STANDARD policy, will cover:   The named insured, their spouse, their RELATIVES, and anyone under the age of 21 under the guardianship of the named insured, spouse, or resident relative.

Possibly, the nephew's stuff would be covered - but the check would go to YOU, not him.  His girlfriend's stuff wouldn't be covered.  Their son - a great nephew - well, that's a major stretch - since they aren't married, the nephew is going to have to PROVE the child is his, in order to get his stuff covered - which of course, will get paid to YOU.

Also, their stuff will eat into YOUR limit, be subject to YOUR deductible, and any claims will follow YOU, for up to five years (meaning, you can be dropped, for THEIR claims on your policy).

I would strongly recommend the nephew and girlfriend each get a renter's policy, to cover their OWN stuff.

  3. It would be covered by THEIR insurance company if they have a renters or contents policy. It would not, however, be covered by your homeowners insurance. They aren't in your immediate family, so there's no coverage for their stuff.

  4. If you add them to the policy and let your insurance company know they live there then their stuff will be covered.

  5. List all items in your home if you have a fire...and it is best to not specify what is whos belongings.

If you have a fire - the contents check will be written to the owner of the house & the owner of the insurance policy - they should be the same

***EDIT*** wow - some adjustors are just on a power trip.. I hope you get a chance to get with a manager - since your agent agrees with US that you should be getting payment for most items in your house (I do agree that the girlfriend might be an exclusion) have them either tell you who to contact to get the help you need OR make the phone call for you. Every adjustor has a manager & can be taken off of a claim if they aren't doing things fairly
