  1. A paddle boat cruise  on the Potomac. See if there is one scheduled at twilight - that would be romantic. Or drive on down to Mount Vernon it too is on the Potomac River (it is very wide there) and propose alone the shoreline. Visit the website for Alexandria at www.visitalexandriava.com for other ideas. It's a wonderful historic town (lots of traffic on the major arteries though). Congratulations!!

  2. I would love to help you here.  My suggestion is to make it an afternoon affair.  If I was to think of a romantic place in Old Town...it would have to be the Gazebo behind Carlyle House.  Carlyle House is on the corner of North Fairfax and Cameron Street.  Hidden in the back is a lovely garden and a gazebo that is home to many a wedding ceremonies.  It closes rather early, but I believe you can stroll behind the building to steal a few private moments alone.

If that doesn't suit you, I would then stroll down Cameron Street to the waterfront.  There are dozens of park benches lining Waterfront park to have privately ask your honey to marry you!

Then I'd stroll her back up King Street and take her to dinner at Restaurant Eve (Pitt Street).  If you do it early enough, you should be able to snag reservations in the tasting room.  Reservations can be tough to get.  Another appropriate choice would be La Bergerie (Lee Street).

After dinner, stroll your fiance to the Jazz Room at 219 and listen to some nice music!

If you want to go over the top.... booked a room at the Hotel Monaco and really swept her off her feet by spending the night there!

EDIT:  I just walked by Carlyle House and see the garden is open until 8pm!!

This would be what I would have wanted if my husband had a l**k of romance in him....;P
