I have narrowed it down to getting a degree in one of these two fields. What are the pros and cons of each of these? How do they compare in pay, demand, security, overtime and the like?

  1. Everything is comparable. Forget security, that is something that you need to do for yourself in the form of your own retirement plan. The only possible security would be to make a career of Civil Service work. The biggest question is what do you like? For myself, I would choose the Electronics field since there is a greater likelihood of working in an air conditioned environment. That said, either one could put you out in the hot and sweaty of an industrial environment.

  2. A high school diploma and and a two year AAS degree in electronics will just about qualify you for welfare assistance.  Take my word for it. With a two year degree, you'll end up doing the nonsense work that engineers don't want to waste their time with and, you will not be very happy.

Do yourself a favor and don't stop with an AS degree. Do what you have to do in order to get that BSEE degree. Then you'll be able to find the work that will be both satisfying and rewarding---a career.

If you have to, get your AS degree, work part-time and continue with your education toward that BSEE.  If you do, you'll be sooooo glad you did down the road of life aways.

    Good luck.
