  1. Pros:

    - Closest thing to a home movie theatre experience

    - Biggest screen for the $$ (8-10 feet is easily feasible with a 1080p/24 fps image for under $2500)

    - more space for a group to watch "the game" or "the movie of the week"

    - Can be completely hidden if required (although so can HDTVs)

    - if installed in a basement less prone to flooding damage (at least relative to floor standing rear projectors)

    - Higher WAF index.

    Cons:

    - works best in a dim/dark room (but so does an HDTV)

    - lamps have to be replaced ($300-$500) every 2-3000 hrs (2-4 years)

    - more difficult to install (but it's still a DIY project)

    - A big screen setup requires a larger room

    - No (practical) speakers built in ... you ned to run sound through a home thatre receiver and speakers (but why would you do anything else!)

    - no HDTV tuner (analogous to an HDTV monitor)

    - have to clean air filters periodically

    - must take precautions to avoid rapid on/off lamp cycles
