I am going to move to Latin America at the end of summer and i am thinking Guatemala might be the best place. I am 25 have a wife and 2 year old daughter and a dog. I was thinking around Antigua. I wondering about where is the best place to live and if it is not Guatemala then where? I am looking for a nice stable but still cheap place to live for 6 months to a year. Belize has gotten to expensive.

-Antigua has beautiful old churches, cobblestone streets its a    quaint town.

    Cons

    -Locals say its dangerous.

-Its not that clean, people pee all over the street.

-Watch out for those military guy on the street holding guns.

Try Costa Rica.  Yes, it may be getting more expensive but try a smaller town instead of main tourist locations.

By the way El Salvador has tons of earthquakes.

  2. if you plan to move to guatemala sounds great but i would recomend el salvador thats were im staying for 7 months ive been here for a month so far and the place is great its cheap too and you wont have to change dollars to quetzales because in el salvador we use dollars and well housing is cheap here if you want to live in anice neighborhood and have a nice house to rent ill say about $200 american dollars amonth wich is alot of money here salvadoreans live with a income of $160 a month! and thers so much to do here youll be happy youll love it good luck!

p.s el salvador has had a couple of earthquakes this year but so has the rest of central america if you read there news or live here you hear about what happens in central america and they are small you cant even feel them and houses here are made of some material that the house even if there was an earthquake the house wouldnt fall apart, crack,or move out of its place at all houses that cant even be burned if you tried so the house are made to last here and like i said you can try it out since ive been here they said in the news there was 2 earthquakes but i didnt even feel them because they are mainly in the golf of fonseca were el salvador has 4 of its many islands so they are mainly in the water

  3. Costa Rica is stable and with higher per capita income.  Yet it's still cheap for someone from the US.  It has free healthcare.  And if you want to go deluxe you can pay like $20/month for a health plan and not wait in lines.

  4. You would be better off in Panama or Costa Rica.I have nothing against Guatemalans but it's not the safest country in Central America.

  5. Gautemala is ok, but not well traveled by most Americans and Canadians.  You might be better off in Panama or Costa Rica where there are a few more amenities.

Finding a home for rent with $400.00 dollars shouldn't be that difficult if you speak Spanish... anywhere in Central America.  We have a 3bd 1bth in a Spanish speaking area of Panama City and we rent the home for $225/mo and we're lucky to have renters that pay on-time and are willing to pay a deposit.

Note, Panama is developing faster than any country I know of in Latin America and Costa Rica recently trained a 132 police officers specifically to help Gringos! and make them feel more safe.

There are many good people in Guatemala... just be careful who you choose as your neighbor, no matter where you are in the world.

    Good luck!

    Try those ones:

    Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Costa Rica
