  1. You don't walk around with a gi on out in the street. There are a lot of chokes and stuff that involve a gi, but what if you were out at a bar or something?

  2. I keep seeing people saying the gi isn't practical because no one walks around with a gi on. Sure no one wears a gi but ALL people wear clothes. You can choke someone with a T SHIRT. Marcelo Garcia is considered the best grappler in and out of a gi he trains only one day a week without a gi. Marcelo Garcia believes that in order to have the finest technique you must use the gi. I think you need both because some things are hard in each. Without the gi arm triangles, darce chokes and guilitenes slip in easier so you have yo defend these more aggressively. With a gi if you get caught in an armbar you have to work out of it technically instead of just slipping out. Do both and your technique with get even better. Doing different things will expose what you need to work on and make you better.

  3. Ju-jitsu with a gi tends to slow things down just a fraction and that can be nice for beginners.  Gis also don't allow much in the way of slippage; especially when people start sweating.  On the other hand no-gi is a little more piratical I think as far as self defense.  Those techniques that require you to use the gi are nice but oftentimes people are not going to have on that heavy of a shirt or jacket so you really can't use those techniques in the street so easily or without making some adjustments.
