  1. On Carnival, the curtain were very heavy so there were no issues with sunrise light.

It was very nice to have the private space but the balconies are very small.  Enough room for two chairs.

More than aft/port, it is the deck location.  You don't want a cabin that is located over high noise areas like the theater or the casino or right next to high traffic areas like the elevator, stairs, outside doors or service areas.

  2. Pros, they are all the same room and style no matter where its located. The balcony is a nice feature, even if you think you will not use it, you will find yourself taking little rests out on the chairs watching the sea go by.

Cons, in an aft or froward cabin your more likely to feel the ship movements.

  3. Let me try to help you, as travel is my business and I am familiar with most of the cruise ships and their layouts.  Julie T doesn't realize that aft means toward the rear of the ship, Sane is still under the old misconception that where your cabin is on board a ship will determine how much movement you'll have.

The aft cabins are in a great location, and are my personal favorites.  I love sitting on the balcony and having breakfast.

Although the aft cabins can range in size from the same as the other cabins to large enough to sleep 8, the aft balconies are always larger than those of a conventional cabins.

The areas around the engine/propellers in the rear are heavily soundproofed, then the next few decks are crew decks.  The aft passenger cabins are so far above the engines you'd never hear or feel a thing.  Besides there have been so many innovations in ship design, that there are not only propellers on the engine shaft in the rear of the ship, but there are engine pods at strategic points under a ship to provide more stability and better control.

Ships in the last 10+ years have also added stabilizers which can be extended or retracted as necessary to prevent the ship from rocking in heavy seas and wind, so the old myth that you have to book a cabin in the middle of the ship and be at the lowest point in the ship for the least movement ,no longer exists.  It doesn't matter where your cabin is on board the ship with regards to movement.

There is no sound issue with cabins above the theater or casinos.  Most ships have these public areas in a separate area from passenger areas and, if there are cabins over any of these public areas, they are very heavily soundproofed.  The only cabins I would really avoid would be those near the elevators or stairs as you will get a lot of noise just from the traffic in these public areas.

The only con of the aft cabin would be a longer walk to the stairs or elevators, but the aft cabins are worth the walk.

Book the aft cabin and Bon Voyage!

If you're lucky enough to be able to book
