I am doing a persuasive speech on homeschooling vs public schooling, taking the side that public schooling is better. I really have nothing against homeschooling but i needed to take a side. What kinds of things could help me persuade that public is better over home?

  1. There really are no pros for homeschooling, I'll just put it to you that way...

  2. Home school pros:

    Much more opportunity for socialization.

    More flexible curriculum.

Freedom to go at your own pace; if you want to spend more time on a subject you can, if you catch on faster you aren't held back by the rest of the class.

    Public school pros:

Exposure to drugs, s*x, and violence.

Unnatural forced socialization. (in life do we only socialize with 25 other people all of the same age group?)

    Teachers who don't care.

No actual learning except how to pass standardized tests.

  3. home schooling should be banned, these kids are not gonna know how to communicate n deal with others

  4. With public school kids learn to deal with other kids and relate to them and make friends and learn to deal with real problems that people cause and they face life. and homeschooling they dont face everyday problems that people cause. but some pros about homeschooling is that the parent controls what the kid learns and how they learn it. but public school is much better in my opinion. hope this helps!

  5. Homeschooling is anything the parents make it to be.

We are finishing our first year of homeschooling. My girls are older so the change was difficult for them, but they love it.

There is so much freedom. We teach what we want them to learn. Of course all basics but we added so much more. They are learning bible, music, etiquette classes and more.

By homeschooling they are exposed to children of all ages and to their parents so the have a better social life. Children in public school are exposed to children of the same age.

The homeschooling network in our town provides tutoring, sports, co-ops, proms, graduation ceremonies, and so much more.

Another advantage is that we can take vacations when everyone else is in school.

I could go on and go. It might not be for everyone, but it definitely for us.

  6. So, you want pros for PS and cons for HS and for a persuasive speech you won't need to back anything up so it doesn't matter if you miss things out, use biased sources or distort the facts a bit ;-)

HS cons - teaching union reps would be a good source of anti-HS quotes, saying that only a qualified teacher can teach. Play up their professional status, e.g. if the person you're quoting has a title like Doctor or Professor, use it. Look for press reports about the fall in national science standards and link it to religious fundies HSing to avoid teaching evolution. In fact you could use the anti-g*y = hate crimes angle too.

PS pros - steer away from academic achievement, that's a lost cause. Go on about sports teams, making friends, how PS exposes kids to a wide range of different ideas and cultures. Oh, and throw in child welfare, suggest that if kids go to PS they're less likely to be abused, that recent case in CA can usefully be quoted here.

None of this would stand a snowball's chance in Hades if it were a debate against a half way informed opponent, but for a speech with no Q&A you should be fine.

  7. Public schooling gives you access to specialist equipment eg spectroscopes and sensor systems for science, tools and large machines  for wood and metalwork and technology projects.

PS teachers are trained to teach students in such a way as to maximize each individuals achievement. Including those with special abilities and disabilities.

PS teachers know the content of their subject area even at the higher educational levels.

A student is more likely to enjoy a subject and learn well when taught by a teacher who loves it than a parent who hates it.

PS students learn to persevere through work that does not interest them or is difficult rather than opting for only the things they enjoy. All working adults have aspects to their jobs which are difficult and boring.

Public schools have QUALIFIED support professionals such as counselors, learning support staff, Speech and language therapists, special needs assistance.

88% of US high school students NEVER use drugs (OECD data)  This varies by region in many schools even fewer students use drugs.

PS gives you the opportunity to deal with peer pressure. Peer pressure does not stop after High school. Adults often pressure each other to conform on parenting styles, life style, children's education, religion  etc...Read these forums.

PS gives parents and students valuable time apart from each other.

PS allows input from people with different viewpoints which allows you to develop critical thinking skills.

and lastly challenge your opponent to name ONE successful contemporary person (eg judge, senator, president, CEO etc ) who was home schooled for most of their education.

  8. A big con of public schooling is that they teach to the test and don't do anything that is relevant outside of the test.
