Prospective’s tough attitude as a yearling helps him as a runner
Other than the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile blemish last fall at Churchill Downs, where Prospective has a tough run under jockey Luis Contreras, the 3-year-old has had toughen up to compete with his Kentucky Derby hopefuls on equals terms each time he
has gone out in the field, and the proof of that is a stellar performance in the Grade 2 Tampa Bay Derby where he pulled away like a solid runner who knew what he was doing to keep Golden Ticket at bay until the wire.
According to the former partner of Tommy Eastham’s Legacy Bloodstock, Mark Toothaker that the Kentucky bred son of Malibu Moon was a tough yearling, and all that has made him into a tough, competitive horse which fully gets translated in his racing career,
and speak volumes of his personality.
“He’s a horse that wants to stalk the leaders and then he’s just absolutely like a bulldog that takes a bite of you in the stretch,” Toothaker said. “He’s a horse that’s got tons of courage and the grit and determination that he showed as a yearling and
all that has certainly carried over to the track. He is a very, very determined horse.”
John C. Oxley owned out of mare Spirited Away by Awesome Again, Prospective has sized up the Kentucky Derby trail as well as the early considered favourites of the race, and he has the Grade 1 Wood Memorial in sights just before the big race.
The Wood Memorial is a symbolic race just before the Kentucky Derby, and many believe if he gives it all in the Wood, than the Mark E. Casse trained colt will be ready to grab the Derby.
Alpha, Gemologist, and My Adonis will be there to stop him, but Prospective in his recent victory has shown enough promise to overhaul the likes of aforementioned runners, with all due respect to their ability and their chances to win the Wood Memorial.
Prospective has gone on to win four of his seven career races, and he is looking good to down his 5th win in the Wood Memorial going into the Derby.
