Proteas attack the best believes assistant coach Russell Domingo – Cricket News Update
South Africa’s assistant coach, Russell Domingo, believes that the current crop of bowlers in the national team remain the best in the world and claimed that anyone would be happy to captain such a formidable bowling lineup.
The Proteas’ currently are in prime form on their tour of New Zealand, registering ODI and T20 triumphs to their names under the leadership of AB de Villiers before Graeme Smith’s Test squad asserted their dominancy in the 3-match series - leading it by
a 1-0 margin.
Their pace arsenal includes a combination that remains potent amongst any of the top cricketing nation. Dale Steyn is widely regarded as the best exploiter of swing, both with the old ball and the new one. His partners include Morne Morkel, whose height
gives him the add advantage of hurrying the batsmen on the crease, and a certain Vernon Philander, who has been a revelation since making his debut last year.
The pacer currently has an astonishing Test average of 13.60 from the 6 matches he has played so far, and has taken a whopping 45 wickets, which already includes two 10-wicket hauls. His rise has certainly caught the eye of many including Domingo.
"He's got an unbelievable amount of skill, really good control, can bowl a good bouncer, is up mid 130s and a lot of self confidence which is a great recipe for fast bowler. He has got controlled aggression which is great,” said Domingo.
Another reliable pace option remains in the shape of all-rounder, Jacques Kallis, who arguably has the experience to adapt to diverse conditions. While the spin department has not been the strongest area for the Proteas in the past, the rise of leg-spinner
Imran Tahir has given the team an added dimension. Still learning his trade, the Pakistani-born remains an out an out wicket-taker, which makes him a key component of the bowling line up.
Domingo further claimed that Graeme Smith (Test skipper) has never been so content with the bowling attack."He's said that he is probably more happy with this attack than he ever has been," Domingo said of Smith. "He's got all facets covered.
The third and final game between the two sides will be played on March 23, 2012 at Wellington.
