Question:

Protecting bike lock from rain?

Hello, I have a bike that has to stay outdoors. Recently, my (not very good) lock gave up the ghost to the rainwater and the pins broke. I had to saw it off. I've replaced my lock with a better one, but the rain has come back, am I'm already noticing a stiffness when I turn the key and increased difficulty locking up. While this might be due to the quality of the lock, I worry that the rain is getting in and damaging the locking mechanism. Does anyone have tips for protecting bike locks from the weather?

  1. Personally. I'd use some WD-40 as a water displacer. Give it a good dry with a cloth and cover the lock in a plastic bag or something in case it rains.

  2. WD-40. It'll losen up the mechanisms and help repell water to a certain degree. WD-40 is a water displacant, anti-corrosive, cleaner and lubricant.

  3. I would use motor oil, just a few drops may help the situation.

  4. Get a lube with Teflon in it and lube it frequently.  Tri Flow is what I use on locks that are out in the rain and they last a few years.  I live in the Seattle area and you might say my locks see some rain, and ice.
