Question:

Protection glasses while working on the computer - do they make a difference?

i am always in front of the computer due to the nature of my work. about 12 hours a day. in the past year and a half my prescription has grown by -0.75 and my optician said it is most likely because of the computer and i should wear special protection glasses (i always wear contacts) . does anyone wear these? how can i get them in the uk and how much would they cost? i don't want prescription ones, just for the protection, to wear only while working on the computer.

do they really make a difference? will it stop my vision from getting worse? I am 26 years old if that helps.

any professional opinions?

  1. Looking at a computer screen causes the muscles in your eye that control focus to work overtime.  You may try to wear some over the counter readers in the lowest power (+1.00 or +1.25) while your at the computer.  Distance would be blurry but it would lessen the strain on your eyes.  Ask your optician for a near Rx for just at the computer.  Anti-reflective coating may also help. You can find these specifically for computer use on the internet, but beware.  They are usually just glorified OTC readers.  Hope that helps!

  2. presumably your optician knows what he is talking about he is the expert, cost wise i dont know if its the same at your place of work but if anyone needs glasses specifically for computer use at my place of work our employer will pay for them but not if they are glasses for everyday use, they see it as a health and safety issue might be worth asking even if they only contribute towards the cost
