I work late at night, with some rough neighbors nearby. There has been some driveby shooting and a stabbing down my road. Granted it was over a mile away but still have my fears. I know I could just move but I have a riding center that cant just be picked up and moved somewhere else. I dont know to much about guns. So what would be a decent, cheap, effective, and easily carried gun. I have a 20g shotgun but not convenient for me to carry on my side.

  1. You can get a highpoint 9mm for 150 bucks.  If you want something nicer, you can get a glock (9mm, 45ACP, or 40S&W) for around 500 bucks.

Please don't listen to the guy above me, if these guys have real guns and knives, do not pull a bb gun on them.  You will get shot without a chance to defend yourself.   TO THE GUY ABOVE ME:  Come on, this guy is talking about a street where people have been stabbed and shot, not a bunch of kids with aluminum bats.

That's as cheap as handguns get.  They aren't great quality, but they go bang when you pull the trigger.

  2. Beretta 9mm

  3. Get yourself a S&W 9mm with a 17 round magazine; nothing is more discouraging than tangling with somebody who just keep on coming and firing.  Don't forget to put up that sign on your mailbox that says "Insured by Smith & Wesson".  Would also suggest a 12 gauge pump over the 20 gauge; 18 or 20 inch barrel and extended magazine.  A handgun is only a last ditch thing if nothing else is available at hand and never forget it.  The sound of a 12 gauge being pumped adds wings to the feet.  A sign that says "Please do not feed the dobermans" also gives pause for concern to those that would do the wrong thing.

  4. FIRST, YOU NEED A PERMIT! AND A 32 SATURDAY NIGHT SPECIAL WOULD DO THE TRICK! but get a permit!

  5. Listen to Road Haz and if you don't have much experience with guns take a gun safety course first.  Then decide whether you want a semi-auto or revolver.  Get your CCW.

Good economic handgun choices are Rugers in either revolver or semi:  Revolvers like the GP100 or SP-101.  Autos like the new LCP or older full-size "P" series.  The P-89 is a great 9mm.

    Good luck.

  6. best advise I can offer you is to talk with a local cop you feel you can trust, find out what the laws are in your area and see what he/she might suggest.

  7. Well its gonna take a while to get real firearms. So try using something more legal thats just as scary like bb guns or airsofters.

  8. Depends on what you think you can handle. I have carried a 380 mag as well as a 9mm. With the right bullets, they will both stop someone without problems. A 357 would also work alright and some people prefer a 45 just because they think size matters. Right now, I have a 9mm and like it very well. It handles nicely, doesn't mess up and fits my hand comfortably (one of the most important things to consider).

  9. A small womans carry pistol in 38 or 9mm would work well for your situation.

  10. Maybe this sight will help. http://www.snubnose.info/docs/m642.htm

  11. Ordinarily, I would suggest a .22 LR revolver.  However, in this instance, I recommend a good used .38 SPL or .357 Magnum revolver.  There are plenty of old police surplus revolvers on the market.  You should  not have trouble finding one in good condition for a fairly modest price.

If possible, take a handgun training class, and apply for a Concealed Carry Permit so you will be legal.  Use .38 SPL ammo until you familiarize yourself with your revolver.

For pocket carry, I highly recommend the S&W Bodyguard or Centennial.  The Bodyguards (M-49, M-638, or M-649) have a shrouded hammer and the Centennials (M-40, M-442, M-640) are hammerless revolvers.  Both are small frame 5-shot revolvers and can be had in either .38 SPL or .357 Magnum.

For a belt gun, S&W Models 19, 66, and 686, and Ruger GP-100's are great choices.

    Good Shooting,

  12. 9mm are easy and small so it would be simple for you to use

my dad caries a 40cal and it is great for carrying also but the 40's are kinda expensive

  13. Im only 15, but my dad takes me to the shooting range a lot. So i have learned that an easy gun for all beginners is the 9mm babyeagle. Im not sure how much it costs, but it's easy to work with. I've shot many, but i shoot right on target with this gun. I also seen friends of mine who are beginners shoot with this gun and think they're naturals.

  14. A snub would fit you well

Small light , inexpensive and simple to use and not to difficult to master for it's intended purpose

Hi Points are not bad guns, they just aren't small of light

Anyone that suggests a Deagle should be ignored

Most of the other answers have come from people who are just too young to know what they are talking about and that just because it's  daddy's gun doesn't mean it's the best for every situation

    You have been reported

That type of immature behavior is no longer acceptable in this section

  15. It is good advice to find out about the laws in your locality have to say about carrying a handgun outside of your property.  Go to this site and check it out:

    http://www.handgunlaw.us/

Once you've established what your freedoms are concerning what firearms are legal, start looking for a decent gun shop in your area.  A good handgun for emergency use that fits your criteria would be a Ruger SP101 in .357 Magnum.  It will work when you need it to, they can be had for about $350-400 used, most of the shops I've been to.

If you like semi-automatics better, seriously consider buying a Glock, they're dead reliable and offer good ammo capacity.  If possible, buy one chambered for .45 ACP.  For best results in self-defense situations, always use a gun chambered for either 9mm, 40 S&W, .45 ACP, .38 Special, or .357 Magnum.  Stick with those, they'll never let you down if you do your part.
