Question:

Protein - Weight Lifting questions?

I am 5'8 and 121lbs currently.

I am trying to possibly reach 145ish.

I will be going to the gym MWTRF at school.

I am also trying to eat more nowdays.

Is it true I should have the same amount of grams of protein as the amount of pounds I weigh?

Is Muscle Milk decent? I heard it has a bit of fat.

I heard whey protein is better. How many grams should I take after a workout?

Since I'm at school, I won't have access to cold milk or even cold water, how would it taste?

Does taking protein like weigh protein or muscle milk really make a significant difference? As opposed to not taking those supplements?

Thanks!

  1. Yes, protein intake should be rough 1g per lb of bodyweight.

A post workout drink shouldn't be a big load of protein. Protein digests slowly. You want fast digestion after a workout to fuel the recovery and growing processes asap.  A post recovery drink should be taken within 30 minutes after completing a workout.

Post workout drinks should be something that digests quickly. Chocolate milk or white milk with 3-6 tablespoons of sugar has been researched and found effective.

If you don't like warm milk or can't take a thermos, then buy a non-diary commerically available recovery drink.

Protein intake should be spaced throughout the day. Drink the protein drink at some other time of the day, when you are not getting much protein from a meal. E.g. with oatmeal for breakfast, or as a snack between meals.

I don't have any experience with Muscle Milk. The top contributor to this forum, lv_consultant, is very knowledgeable on protein supplements and he has been positive on muscle milk. He has many excellent posts on food intake for weight gain. See http://answers.yahoo.com/my/profile?show...
