I work out six days a week I've been consuming protein after I work out. Should I be doing this before or after?

  1. It doesn't matter if it is before or after, as long as you take it within a half hour of your actual workout.  I prefer after since you can work up an appetite after working out.

  2. Consuming something both before and after is helpful to your body.  If you are looking to gain muscle mass, you need to be eating something before or else you are just burning off what you already have.  You want your body to be running off the food you just ate so you are adding, not taking away.

And consuming protein after you work out is just as, if not more, important.  Your muscles do not grow while you are doing your workout, they grow during your resting period when they are repairing themselves.  And they can't do that unless they get all the nutrients they need first.  Consuming protein is a great way to get your muscles those nutrients fast;  but not just any protein; you would probably want to try drinking whey protein shakes.  Your muscles can get what it needs in as little as 15 minutes if you take that.  If you are eating things like chicken or other meats it's a little slower.

So it's a really good think that you have been consuming protein after your workout because the faster that your muscles can repair themselves, the sooner you will be able to work them out and put on more mass.

  3. 20g pre, and 40g post with 70-80g carbs

  4. After is just fine
