Question:

Protein substitutes?

I was wondering what some good protein substitutes are as I'm considering becoming a vegan but I want to make sure I have adequate protein substitutes as my sister previously went vegetarian and suffered health problems because of a lack of protein substitutes.

I've surfed the Internet but not many actual substitutes for protein were shown and none of my friends are vegan or vegetarian so I can't get any help there. I'm already sure about the other aspects of a vegan diet but it's just the protein that has me stuck.

Lastly, I live in Vietnam so many Western foods aren't available, just in case that's an important factor. So any vegetables or other foods that would make up for the protein I'd usually get from meat, please write them!

  1. I don't know if they sell this stuff in Vietnam, I'm blessed to live in Los Angeles where there are tons of gourmet vegan, raw vegan, and vegetarian restaurants. Anyway, they cook seitan, tofu, and tempeh. They are all made with soy, vegetable, or wheat. They cook up like meat and can be made to resemble bacon, chicken, burgers, ground beef, etc. I guess seitan and tempeh may be hard to find but you can always use tofu...?

Try eating nuts, whole wheats, and veggies. Sunflower seeds have lots of protein. Potatoes, protein powder, and granola bars are good too.

    Best of luck to you.

  7. If you want to become vegan your protein choices are soy products (tofu), beans and rice, legumes, eggplant, and all sorts of nuts have to be a vital part of a vegans daily caloric intake, to insure that enough protein is assimualted into the body for proper health and to hold their muscle mass.

  8. well i live in malaysia so i can completely understand how hard it is to find vegan replacements for cooking at things, but with living in asia we have an advantage of having so many soy products easily available.  tofu(or bean curd) is an excellent source of protein, and other soy foods like miso, edamme, tempeh all contain b-vitamins and omega 3 fatty acids, which are very good for us.

things like oatmeal, brown rice, broccoli, almonds, potato's and peanut butter are all a good source of protein too.  so while it may be hard to find things like egg replacers, or vegan cheese, it's actually very easy to maintain a well balanced healthy vegan diet whilest living in vietnam.
