Protein supplement ok for girls?

im taking protein supplements basically protein bar with 19 g of protein and a protein shake with 15g of protein per day because im a vegetarian and do not get enough proteins from my diet. is this ok? i dont want to gain weight and neither do i want to gain muscle. is this ok or should i stop taking it?

  1. The average person needs only about 50 grams of protein per day. If you are eating properly as a vegetarian, then you are most likely getting enough protein already without the shake and bar.

    You can find protein is almost all foods, even most junk foods contain a gram or two. Protein deficiencies are very rare in developed countries and are most seen in places where people are suffering from famine.

    I would suggest keeping a food log of what you are eating during the day. Be sure to right down how much protein you are taking in(as well as other key nutrients if you choose). You may be surprised that you are getting over the 50 grams of protein with the shake and bar.

    Again, you would be surprised just how much protein is found in actual food. Protein supplements are a waste of money.

    Milk, 1 cup - 8 grams

    Yogurt, 1 cup – usually 8-12 grams

    Tofu, ½ cup 20 grams protein

    Almonds, ¼ cup – 8 grams

    Oatmeat - 1 cup - 8 grams

    Brocolli - 1 cup - 4 grams

    As you can see there is adequate protein in many foods. If you start your day off with a bowl of oatmeal and add milk/soymilk, and drink a glass of orange juice, you will already have consumed about 18 grams of protein.

    Make healthy choices with food and you should be fine as far as protein goes. Choose yogurt over cookies, oatmeal over fruit loops, etc.

  3. Well I am a vegetarian and my doctor recommended a B-12 and Protein supplement called Klamath Blue Green Algae. It has all of your needed B-12 and an unheard of 650 mg of Protein.   5. First make sure you get enough protein without it by getting a physical at your doctors.  Too much protein can be very dangerous.

  6. You are probably getting way too much protein because unless you eat nothing but junk all day, a vegetarian diet offers plenty of protein.  Protein is pretty much in everything.  I get enough without even trying.
