  1. Proteins that are embedded into the cell membrane are called protein channels. Large molecules and polar molecules are unable to pass through the phospholipid bilayer due to their size/charges. Channel proteins change their CONFIRMATION (shape) when a substrate attaches to the receptor on the channel protein. Changing the shape of the protein allows for an ion (or other molecule) to be transported through the interior of the channel protein.
