Question:

Protestants: Does your church only talk about Mary (Jesus' Mom) at Christmas?

Because when I was a Protestant it seemed like they brought her out of a box at Christmas for the Nativity scene, and then packed her away for the rest of the year. That was pretty much the only time she was ever brought up in conversation.

In contrast, Mary Magdalene was talked about very often, and especially at Easter. (Mary (Jesus' Mom) wasn't mentioned that often even though she was at the foot of the cross too...)

Not to mention the fact that she was with the Apostles at Pentecost, but when speaking about Pentecost everyone would talk about the Apostles and skip over her...

  1. When I was growing up ( Presbyterian), I really can not remember even a nativity being set out at Christmas.

Of course we went to church, but Christmas was mainly decorating the tree, visiting relatives and gifts.

Easter also was going to church

But I feel like it was focused on a new outfit, hat & purse, the Easter basket and the family meal.

I converted to Catholicism 17 years ago.

  2. Mary is the mother of Jesus, but not the mother of Christ, as He is the Risen.  She was His mother while on earth, which was a very important job.  We talk about Mary at Christmas and at Easter since we don't do many special days in my church.  We usually watch a trailer of Passion of the Christ featuring Mary when we do communion, so we see her then as well.  But we don't have saints and we don't venerate Mary.

  3. Yes, I grew up protestant and she featured mostly during Christmas. Mary Magdalene featured during Easter.

I don't know however, what the American Christians believe and what they do. They seem to have a totally different belief and different way of Christianity than the rest of the world.

  4. Wow, I've always wanted to ask this being raised a Protestant, but didn't know how to put it.....I liked how you said," she came out of the box for the Nativity scene at Christmas". That's exactly how much I knew of her and Joseph. I think I knew more of a drummer boy (who isn't even in the scene).

    Thanks for sharing this.

  5. No not just at Christmas, but she is not discussed NEARLY as much as the Catholic church discusses her. I really think it isn't actually the church, but the people that really start going overboard. The Rosary is fine, but it gets carried far and away beyond that, which I also think is wrong. I am thinking of converting to Catholicism (as I say in many of my answers lol) but Jesus will ALWAYS reign supreme in my heart, with all due honor given to his Blessed Mother!

eta: Sorry Catholics who gave me the thumbs down, but Jesus is my savior, and He gets the glory in my life! Deal with it :)

  6. Mary, the mother of Jesus, is spoken of seldom within Protestant churches. The reason for this we feel (and yes we do discuss why this is) is on account of the devotion that Catholicism gives to her. Catholics go overboard, to simply state it. Protestants tend to go the other direction, and we end up ignoring her altogether. The balance is obviously somewhere in the middle. Has anyone found that balance, I wonder?

Neither Protestants or Catholics are truly honouring Mary.

  7. I think it is because there are more important things to talk about.

The bible doesn't say to pray to Mary, so we don't.

And we don't have statues because of the commandment that forbids it.
