Question:

Protruding Jaw but nice bite?

I have noticed all my life something was off, and have come to the conclusion that it could be a protruding jaw. However, I have a wonderful bite, with teeth that fit perfectly. Is it possible to have a protruding jaw that your front teeth fit into? I am pretty sure my lower jaw is forward and angled upward slightly. I think perhaps surgery to move the jaw back a centimeter and a half and then braces to move my front teeth back to fit the newly aligned jaw should do the trick. Any answers for me?

  1. If you have been noticing this all your life then you obviously have given it some serious attention.  In studies of people perceptions  of jaw placement people in general prefer set in jaws.  protruding jaws are seen as more ominous and intimidating.

However, since you know about jaw resection then you already know that.

The only thing I would want to tell you is that usually in a jaw resection case is that they put the braces on first make the gap worse, so that for a few months  your lower teeth are out in front of the uppe teeth, then on Surgury day the jaw is cut and the teeth are already in the place the surgeon wants them.  This makes his job more straightforward.  He resects  (cuts) the jaw and wires the teeth in position and places screws and wire the mouth shut for a week or so.  And when the wires come off your teeth need minimal alignment.

It's an awesome surgury. requiring a dentist, orthodontist, and oral sugeon to work together.  You want them to have worked together before. so that you know they have experience comunicating with each other.

  2. Orthodontists in my area will do free consultations. Perhaps they will where you live also. Contact one or two and see what they tell you your options are. Good luck!
