His fans look on as the Sri Lankan star cricketer, Sanath Jayasuriya, enters the finale of his career. Now nearly 42, the player is the oldest cricketer in international cricket.
Jayasuriya plans to make his final trip to the crease at the lone-T20 match and a one day game, during Sri Lanka’s Tour of England, 2011. The player is then set to announce his awaited retirement as he plans to pursue his political career.
The player entered Sri Lankan politics earlier last year while deciding to carry on with his international one day cricketing career. He made a place in the parliamentary elections as a candidate for President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s Freedom Alliance Party,
in his hometown of Matara.
In an interview with a British channel, Jayasuriya stated that he does not regret entering politics, however, he regrets that it has divided some of his fans. He believes that making a move in the country’s politics has reshaped the views of some of his
admirers.
“I’m not regretting coming to politics. But the fans got divided that’s true,” said Jayasuriya.
Despite such views, even from some of the fellow team-mates, Jayasuriya commits on keeping cricket and politics on separate paths.
As a first class international player, Sanath Jayasuriya has played a major role for his team and has always served his nation proud.
