  1. Conservation is "wise use"; preservation is maintaining the status quo by a hands-off approach. On a wildlife preserve, no hunting or harvesting is allowed. On a tract managed for conservation, it might be possible to harvest a certain number of animals (or plants), provided there is no decrease in their population.

  2. conservation - using an area's resources at a sustainable rate so as to benefit from its resources but to also minimize environmental damage/affects

preservation - completey setting aside an area so it is undisturbed by humans and there is no environmental damage whatsoever

  3. Preservation preserves natural wilderness and ecology without disturbing it.  Wildlife preserves for instance are pristine wilderness, and no disturbance is legally allowed to the preserved environment.

Conservation is a balanced approach which attempts to preserve wilderness and ecology in a changing landscape.  For instance, if we drill in an Alaskan oil preserve, but try to protect the polar bears from harm this is an act of conservation, rather than preservation.
