  1. Okay, well, this is easy.

I got pissed off enough about my $200 a month electric bill so I did the following:

    1. turned off lights in rooms that I wasnt in

    2. Changed all light bulbs to those compact flourescents

    3. Learned to unplug stuff that wasnt being used

    My bill fell to $45/month

So then I focused on gas. I commute 61.6 miles round trip each day. I started driving more conservatively and started a car pool with coworkers who live in the area.

So then I focused on my oil bill. $200/month sucks. So I did the following:

    1. Set my thermostats to 62 degrees - if its winter, it's supposed to be cold. Put some sweat pants on.

    2. Slightly lowered the temp setting on my boiler.

    My oil bill dropped dramatically.

At work, we started a Green Committee to reduce waste. We initiated recycling programs for all paper, metal, bottles and cans, etc. In our new office space, we designed an open layout that really has done a lot to reduce heating and cooling bills and since it really pushes natural light, we've been able to reduce the amount of artificial light that we use. And we changed everything to energy efficient lighting.

We extended out Green Committee to reassess all vendors that we use. We found out that our cafeteria contractor has energy efficient options that we were able to implement to reduce the waste and energy used by the cafe. We also set new standards for rental cars and car services. Installing a new telecom system and video conferencing system throughout the dozen offices we have throughout the world has dramatically cut down on our need to travel.

Finally, we got rid of all of the soda machines and bottled water. We replaced them with soda fountains and filtered water stations and provided all employees with really awesome reusable drinkware with the company logo on them and the employees name. When they're dirty, we fill up the energy efficient dish washer which is also supposed to use less water. These mugs and cups are made from recycled materials. We even replaced al of the kcup coffee machines with realy nice 5-star gourmet coffee machines that make single serve coffees of your choice without producing the mass of waste that the kcup machines did.

We plan on  installing solar panels on the roof this fall to power all of the lighting.

An easy step to save on energy is to plug all of your electronics into power strips. Most electronics use power when plugged in even when not turned on - LCD tvs and xboxs are examples of this. Turning the powerstrip off saves a lot of power and is easier than unplugging everything.

Also, switch to laptops as they use less power if you also use them when unplugged.

  4. I heard you should unplug your cell phone charger from the wall while your not using it.  There is still an electric current going on.

  5. Hanging your clothes to dry instead of using an electric dryer.

Setting the air conditioner at a higher temp.

Washing your clothes in full loads instead of small ones and using cold water.

Turning out lights when not in use.

  6. 1) Turn off lights when not used.

    2) play outside the house regularly than to play inside the house with videogames.
